The ape is a recurring motif in the artist’s paintings, speaking to how man carries his primal nature with him. His work also speaks to the inhumanity and inequality of apartheid South Africa - a time and place he later described as ‘a vast and terrifying prison’ - as experienced personally by the artist as a gay, Coloured man.
